Thomas Edison's Menlo Park laboratory created thousands of patents every year, the first industrial creative hothouse. He had a clear sense of purpose and the bigger picture. He wanted to go beyond inventing an electric light, to creating an entire national electrical grid.

It may sound grandiose to talk about the bigger picture, but what use is an electric light if there's no electric plug to plug it into?
